Brief Introduction

The essential difference between a power frequency motor and a frequency conversion motor or a adjustable speed ac drives lies in the underlying difference in design goals: the power frequency motor is only optimized for the "rated operating conditions of a fixed power frequency power supply (usually 50Hz/60Hz)", and the original design intention is to achieve stable operation at a single frequency and a fixed speed; the frequency conversion motor is tailored for "frequency conversion conditions that adapt to a wide range of frequencies (such as 0-100Hz) and dynamic speed adjustment", and reliability and efficiency need to be guaranteed at different speeds and loads.

This difference in design goals directly permeates the electromagnetic structure, insulation system, and heat dissipation design. And other key dimensions ultimately determine the performance and applicable scenarios of the two. From the point of view of electromagnetic design, the cross-sectional area of the winding wire of the power frequency motor is only designed according to the rated current, and the loss problem of high-frequency operation is not considered. The iron core uses ordinary silicon steel sheet, which is easy to produce large eddy current and hysteresis losses at high frequencies, and the air gap between the stator and the rotor is small, and high-frequency harmonics can easily cause additional losses; in order to cope with the wide frequency range, the variable frequency motor will use multiple strands of thin wire winding to reduce the high-frequency skin effect, choose low-loss silicon steel sheet to reduce iron loss, and appropriately increase the air gap to reduce the additional torque and loss caused by high-frequency harmonics, and improve the stability of low-speed operation.

The difference in the insulation system is also critical.Power frequency motors mostly use B-class or F-class ordinary insulation materials, and the temperature resistance level can only meet the rated power frequency operating conditions. If they are in a high-frequency environment, the high-frequency voltage can easily cause partial discharge and accelerate insulation aging; frequency conversion motors or adjustable speed ac drives are equipped with high-frequency and corona-resistant special insulation systems (often H-class insulation), the insulation paint is anti-corona type, and the windings are made of special anti-corona electromagnetic wires for frequency conversion motors. The insulation treatment will be strengthened at the end of the winding to effectively avoid the insulation failure caused by high-frequency voltage breakdown or partial discharge, and extend the service life of the motor under frequency conversion conditions.
