Brief Introduction
Multi speed motors and their applications
Multi speed motors usually refer to variable pole speed three-phase asynchronous motors, mainly used in coal mines, oil and gas, petrochemical and chemical industries. In addition, it is widely used in sectors such as textiles, metallurgy, urban gas, transportation, grain and oil processing, papermaking, medicine, etc. Double speed motors, as the main power equipment, are usually used to drive pumps, fans, compressors, and other transmission machinery.
Principle and Method of Multi speed Motor Speed Control
The speed of asynchronous motors is close to synchronous speed and can be approximated by the speed of rotating magnetic potential waves. The asynchronous machine speed can be calculated using the following formula:

Under the premise of constant frequency in equation (1), stepwise speed regulation can be achieved by changing the number of poles. Actually, by changing the connection method of the stator winding or using different stator windings, the number of magnetic poles in the rotating magnetic field of the stator can be changed, thereby changing the speed of the motor.
Two speed, three speed, or four speed motors
Multi speed motors can be operated as two speed, three speed, or four speed.
The two speed motor has six terminals and is divided into two types: single winding multi speed and double winding multi speed. High power density of single winding and no interference between two speeds; Double winding operation has high safety and reliability, but it is prone to circulating current and may cause a certain number of poles to not rotate.
Three speed and four speed motors have 9 terminals and are generally designed for dual winding speed regulation. The issue of mutual interference between the two sets of windings must be considered.
How to save energy for multi speed motors?
A simple switch of external control circuit can change the motor speed. Therefore, when applied to loads such as fans and water pumps, switch to high speed at full load; When under light load, switch to a speed that matches the load, and the output power on the shaft decreases proportionally to the third power of the speed, achieving significant energy-saving effects.
Multi speed motor speed regulation and variable frequency speed regulation
As mentioned above, a multi speed motor belongs to a stepwise speed control system, which makes switching convenient and fast. The principle of variable frequency speed regulation is also based on equation (1), which achieves stepless speed regulation of the motor through continuous adjustment of frequency f. Due to the addition of variable frequency speed regulation with variable frequency power supply, the probability of failure is at least doubled. Therefore, for some applications that do not require wide range speed regulation, customers would rather choose multi speed motors that are not high-end.
